Psalm 27

Hey All,

Have you ever had one of those weeks? No matter where you turn something is going wrong! Your kids are sick. Your wife’s car breaks down coming back from San Antonio 70 miles from home. Later you find out the car has blown out the transmission with a huge repair bill. What next? Well David was feeling the same way in Psalm 27. He was under attack but let’s take a look at how he dealt with the situation.

Psalm 27:1-3 The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread? When the evildoers come upon me to devour my flesh, My adversaries and my enemies, they stumbled and fell. Though a host encamp against me, My heart will not fear; Though war arise against me, in spite of this I will be confident. Can we always exude this level of confidence when we are under attack? He sees his enemies filing in around him and setting up camp but what does David say? I will be confident! My heart will not fear! Why because the Lord is the defense of his life? What boldness. Isaiah 41:10 says: Do not fear for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. What confidence in the face of unknown but we have that same Lord and same power at our side to be confident in every situation. David asks for only 1 thing.

Psalm 27:4-6 One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek; That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. To behold the beauty of the Lord and meditate in His temple. For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His tabernacle; In the secret place of His tent He will hide me; He will lift me up on a rock. And now my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me, And I will offer in His tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing yes, I will sing praises to the Lord. You see David wants to have relationship with his God. He pursues the Lord because he knows his God will protect him and what pours out of his heart? Gratitude and praise for a gracious Father that loves and protects him. Jesus wants the same for you and me as we see in Matthew 6:33 Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. What strength and confidence do we have knowing the the God who conquered death and the devil is on our side. Yet we see a little waiver in David’s faith.

Psalm 27:7-10 Hear O lord, when I cry with my voice, and be gracious to me and answer me, When You said, “Seek my face,” my heart said to You, “Your face O Lord, I shall seek,” Do not hide your face from me, Do not turn your servant away in anger; You have been my help; Do not abandon me nor forsake me, Oh God of my salvation! For my father and my mother have forsaken me, But Lord you will take me up. For a brief moment David is saying Lord I know you have the power and I love you and want to be your servant but don’t forget about me? This is just a little shake in the faith from verses 1-3 where he was confident on not going to worry. Doesn’t this happen to all of us? We going through life and the devil attacks and we are confident. I am not going to worry. God has a plan. I am believing in His provision and then another thing happens and all of a sudden we start to doubt. Jesus once again has to remind us in the last of the great commission that he will be with us always in Matthew 28:20 I am with you always, even to the end of the world. So we see David knows that God has a plan.

Psalm 27:11-14 Teach me your way, O Lord, and lead me in a level path Because of my foes. Do not deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries, For false witnesses have risen against me, And such as breathe out violence. I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes wait for the Lord. Here David is saying Lord just show me the way because what you have is good for me. Knowing this he says he will wait on the Lord and follow or submit to His prompting. Isn’t that what God wants from each of us, to listen to His prompting and be obedient to His will? What is God saying? and What am I going to do about it?

So to wrap up

Father God so many times we start out strong in the faith just as David did, but as we continually get tossed and turned by the turmoil of life we have a dip in or faith. Lord strengthen each of us to to believe in your promise that you will never leave us or forsake us and what you have for us is good! Lord we know you never promised a simple easy life as David said hiding in the tabernacle tent. We believe that you are by our side and I ask today that we will continue to hear your voice and follow that prompting. Lord thank you for the many blessings you give us on a daily basis and for being able to see your will at work in the midst of what sometimes seems to be chaos. Amen? AMEN!
